Report on the Inaugural 2022 Of 2 Days Free Eye Test and Pterygium Surgery Outreach.

INTRODUCTION

RHIFIL NGO, in partnership with RIFIL hospital, conducted a two-day free eye care program at RIFIL hospital premises, Faithway, and at the hospital annex, Uroho community, on Thursday, February 24th, and Friday, February 25th, 2022, respectively. The outreach featured a medical team comprising nurses, doctors, five optometrists, an ophthalmologist, and counselors, who offered their expertise to over 200 patients over the two-day period. The primary objective of the outreach was to enhance people’s vision and provide free counseling services for their overall well-being.

KEY ACTIVITIES

  1. Introduction highlighting the purpose and objectives of the outreach.
  2. Spiritual exhortation to prepare patients for the procedures.
  3. Health Talk sessions.
  4. Patient counseling.
  5. Vital signs assessment.
  6. Eye examinations.
  7. Distribution of medications, free glasses, and pterygium surgeries.

Day 1

The program commenced with opening remarks by Mrs. Josephine Kpere-Daibo, the president of RHIFIL, delivered by Rev. Desmond Osazuwa. Mrs. Kpere-Daibo expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support received from individuals, churches, friends, and partners, without whom the outreach would not have been possible. She emphasized the transformative impact of RHIFIL’s initiatives on society and encouraged participants to seize the opportunity for improved well-being. Rev. Desmond Osazuwa delivered an exhortation, highlighting RHIFIL’s commitment to enhancing people’s health and standard of living through various interventions.

Dr. Akaonye Miracle Chukwuemeka, an Optometrist, delivered a Health Talk emphasizing the importance of eye tests and healthy practices. Simultaneous activities included patient counseling, vital signs assessment, eye examinations, and the administration of medications, eye drops, and free reading glasses. Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the free services received, particularly those who underwent pterygium surgeries, affirming their inability to afford the procedure otherwise.

Day 2

The outreach continued at the RIFIL hospital premises in Uroho community. Pastor Hope Aliagwu delivered a brief message, emphasizing the importance of the outreach and the need for patient cooperation. Dr. Blessed Aireman provided insights into the significance of monitoring blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), and sugar levels regularly. Community leaders, led by Chief Victor Aisagbonbuomwan, expressed appreciation for the outreach and pledged continued support for such initiatives.

Overall, the inaugural 2022 Free Eye Test and Pterygium Surgery Outreach received overwhelming community support and demonstrated the impactful collaboration between RHIFIL and RIFIL in improving the lives of individuals through accessible healthcare services.
